Impermo, 100 years of experience in tiles, natural stone and parquet
The growth of the company in the 20th century.
Ferdinand STULTJENS (born in 1866 - 1st generation), was a merchant on the Grote Markt in St.-Truiden. In 1918, he learned that a second-hand tile press was for sale and he decided to buy it. Because of the devastation of the war, there would after all be a great demand for building materials, according to him. History proved him right, and the foundations of Impermo were laid.
In 1930 the children of Ferdinand (2nd generation) started a large-scale production of cement tiles with marble grain. Even today you still encounter these Impermo tiles in older houses! Despite a massive fire in 1932, which devastated a large part of the factory, Impermo grew into a flourishing company.
In 1975 William and Pierre Stultjens (3rd generation) took over the company. In addition to their own manufacturing of tiles, they also started a construction store for the sale of ceramic floor and wall tiles. Gradually the demand for cement tiles diminished. Conversely, the construction store expanded considerably with ceramic products and natural stone, which were imported from within and outside Europe. From 1985 the latter becomes the main activity of Impermo.
In 1996, Silvie, Luk and Filip Stultjens - the youngest generation - joined the board and took over day-to-day management as the fourth generation. They too let Impermo grow significantly:
